It transports oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues, and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. It transports nutritive substances and metabolites to the tissues and removes waste products to the kidneys and other organs of excretion. It has an essential role in the maintenance of fluid balance. In an emergency, blood cells and antibodies carried in the blood are brought to a point of infection, or blood- clotting substances are carried to a break in a blood vessel. The blood distributes hormones from the endocrine glands to the organs they influence. It also helps regulate body temperature by carrying excess heat from the interior of the body to the surface layers of the skin, where the heat is dissipated to the surrounding air. Blood varies in color from a bright red in the arteries to a duller red in the veins. The total quantity of blood within an individual depends upon body weight; a person weighing 7. Blood is composed of two parts: the fluid portion is called plasma, and the solid portion or formed elements (suspended in the fluid) consists of the blood cells (erythrocytes and leukocytes) and the platelets. Plasma accounts for about 5. These instruments are capable of performing simultaneously a variety of blood chemistry tests. Some of the more common screening tests performed on samples of blood include evaluation of electrolyte, albumin, and bilirubin levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), cholesterol, total protein, and such enzymes as lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate transaminase. Other tests include electrophoresis for serum proteins, blood gas analysis, glucose tolerance tests, and measurement of iron levels. They reflect the ability of the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide, the ability of the kidneys to control the retention or elimination of bicarbonate, and the effectiveness of the heart as a pump. Because the lungs and kidneys act as important regulators of the respiratory and metabolic acid- base balance, assessment of the status of a patient with any disorder of respiration and metabolism includes periodic blood gas measurements. The partial pressure of a particular gas in a mixture of gases, as of oxygen in air, is the pressure exerted by that gas alone. It is proportional to the relative number of molecules of the gas, for example, the fraction of all the molecules in the air that are oxygen molecules. The partial pressure of a gas in a liquid is the partial pressure of a real or imaginary gas that is in equilibrium with the liquid. Pa. O2 measures the oxygen content of the arterial blood, most of which is bound to hemoglobin, forming oxyhemoglobin. The Sa. O2 measures the oxygen in oxyhemoglobin as a percentage of the total hemoglobin oxygen- carrying capacity. A Pa. O2 of 6. 0 mm Hg represents an Sa. O2 of 9. 0 per cent, which is sufficient to meet the needs of the body's cells. However, as the Pa. Diet for O Positive Blood Type. Hg for elderly adults and 1. Hg for young adults. However, some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can tolerate a Pa. O2 as low as 7. 0 mm Hg without becoming hypoxic. In caring for patients with this condition, it is important to know that attempts to elevate the Pa. O2 level to the normal level can be dangerous and even fatal. It is best to establish a baseline for each individual patient before supplementary oxygen is given, and then to assess his condition and the effectiveness of his therapy according to this baseline. The Pa. CO2 gives information about the cellular production of carbon dioxide through metabolic processes, and the removal of it from the body via the lungs. The normal range is 3. Hg. Values outside this range indicate a primary respiratory problem associated with pulmonary function, or a metabolic problem for which there is respiratory compensation. In the newborn the normal Pa. O2 is 5. 0 to 8. 0 mm Hg. At 4. 0 to 5. 0 mm Hg cyanosis may become apparent. Respiratory distress in an infant who is unable to ventilate the lungs adequately will produce a drop in Pa. O2 level. However, there is no marked increase in Pa. CO2 level in some infants as in adults with respiratory distress because many infants can still eliminate carbon dioxide from the lungs even though weakness prevents inhaling an adequate oxygen supply. All infants being ventilated and receiving oxygen therapy require frequent blood gas analyses and also p. H, base excess, and oxygen saturation levels to avoid oxygen toxicity and acid- base imbalance. Blood p. H gives information about the patient's metabolic state. A p. H of 7. 4 is considered normal; a value lower than 7. Because the amount of CO2 in the blood affects its p. H, abnormal Pa. CO2 values are interpreted in relation to the p. H. If the Pa. CO2 value is elevated, and the p. H is below normal, respiratory acidosis from either acute or chronic hyperventilation is suspected. Conversely, a Pa. CO2 below normal and a p. H above normal indicates respiratory alkalosis. When both the Pa. CO2 and the p. H are elevated, there is respiratory retention of CO2 to compensate for metabolic acidosis. If both values are below normal, there is respiratory elimination of CO2 (hyperventilation) to compensate for metabolic acidosis. Abnormal levels of bicarbonate (HCO3. The normal range for HCO3. Abnormally low levels of both HCO3. Conversely, elevations of both of these values indicate metabolic alkalosis. The kidneys maintain bicarbonate levels by filtering bicarbonate and returning it to the blood; they also produce new bicarbonate to replace that which is used in buffering. Therefore, a decreased HCO3. Conversely, if the HCO3. In clinical practice there are four main blood groups or blood types: A, B, O, and AB (see table). In addition to this major grouping there is an Rh- h. R system that is important in the prevention of erythroblastosis fetalis resulting from incompatibility of blood groups in mother and fetus. The ABO blood group system was first introduced in 1. Karl Landsteiner; in 1. AB was discovered by van Descatello and Sturli. Identification of these four major blood groups represented a major step toward resolving the problem of blood transfusion reactions resulting from donor- recipient incompatibility. In 1. 93. 8 Landsteiner and Weiner discovered another blood factor related to maternal- fetal incompatibility. The factor was named Rh because the researchers were using rhesus monkeys in their studies. Further research has uncovered additional factors in the Rh group. Although more than 9. The term factor, in reference to blood groups, is synonymous with antigen, and the reaction occurring between incompatible blood types is an antigen- antibody reaction. In cases of incompatibility, the antigen, located on the red blood cells, is an agglutinogen and the specific antibody, located in the serum, is an agglutinin. These are so named because whenever red blood cells with a certain factor come in contact with the agglutinin specific for it, there is agglutination or clumping of the erythrocytes. In determining blood group, a sample of blood is taken and mixed with specially prepared sera. One serum, anti- A agglutinin, causes blood of group A to agglutinate; another serum, anti- B agglutinin, causes blood of group B to agglutinate. Thus, if anti- A serum alone causes clumping, the blood is group A; if anti- B serum alone causes clumping, it is group B. If both cause clumping, the blood group is AB, and if it is not clumped by either, it is identified as group O. This pressure is determined by several interrelated factors, including the pumping action of the heart, the resistance to the flow of blood in the arterioles, the elasticity of the walls of the main arteries, the blood volume and extracellular fluid volume, and the blood's viscosity, or thickness. The pumping action of the heart refers to how hard the heart pumps the blood (force of heartbeat), how much blood it pumps (the cardiac output), and how efficiently it does the job. Contraction of the heart, which forces blood through the arteries, is the phase known as systole. Relaxation of the heart between contractions is called diastole. The main arteries leading from the heart have walls with strong elastic fibers capable of expanding and absorbing the pulsations generated by the heart. At each pulsation the arteries expand and absorb the momentary increase in blood pressure. Does the Eat Right for your Blood Type Diet Really Work? II am often asked what I think of the Blood Type Diet. It seems to help so many people yet others find it very frustrating to follow and limiting. The short answer: I don't think there is 4 diets on the planet, I think there are 7 billion diets for 7 billion people and we have to eat to our specific needs. I am allergic to most grains, soy, and peanuts yet D'adamo suggests that all Blood Type A's are best as vegetarian. What am I supposed to eat? Without enough protein that I tolerate well, I fear that I would have muscle wasting, digestive problems and hormone imbalance. Even though there is mention that this diet helps us follow our ancestors diet, I am not supposed to eat one of the most healthy Russian foods - cabbage. A Critical Examination Of Blood Type Diets - by Loren Cordain, Ph. D., Professor. The History And Characterization Of Blood Type Diets. Blood type diets were first popularized by Peter D’Adamo, a naturopathic physician, in his best selling 1. Eat Right 4 Your Type. The inspiration for Dr. D’Adamo’s book came from subjective clinical impressions of his father, James D’Adamo; also a naturopathic physician who first proposed this concept in his book, One Man’s Food is Someone Else’s Poison 1. As a member of Bastyr College’s first graduating class of naturopathic physicians in 1. Peter became interested in attempting to validate his father’s subjective and personal observations from reviews of the scientific and medical literature – thus the fundamental reason for Peter writing his hugely successful diet book. He advocates separate diets for people with one of the four most common blood types (A, B, O or AB), and has further subdivided his dietary recommendations into three arbitrary ancestral categories: . Highly beneficial. For each of the 1. If these nutritional recommendations sound somewhat complex to you, I had to re- read them about a dozen times to get the drift myself. Although I don’t want to get ahead of the game, for the observant reader, you may be curious to know how Dr. D’Adamo dreamed up this complex dietary system and if a long trail of experimental human clinical trials exist to support Peter’s recommendations? I, too, had to ask myself these same questions. D'Adamo believes that blood group O (. Accordingly, Peter believes that people with the O blood type had ancestors who were skillful hunters and whose diets were high in meat and animal proteins. For modern people with the O blood type he advocates a high meat, low carbohydrate . Do these dietary recommendations ring a bell for you, or sound vaguely familiar? Keep this thought in mind, as it may well explain the lasting popularity of Peter’s first book. D’Adamo recommends a mainly vegetarian diet - the diet that he personally follows. However, more importantly he recommends that blood type A’s also avoid wheat and dairy (do these recommendations also sound familiar?) and replace meats with some ? Keep these recommendations in mind. Peter suggests that type B’s have evolved the most varied diet and can include both meats and dairy in their daily menu, but again should avoid wheat. Before we move on to the final blood type (AB) it should be noted that Dr. D’Adamo generally eschews highly processed foods (chips, pastries, candy, ice cream, snack food, fast food, etc.) for all blood groups – once again, does this not sound like another familiar dietary suggestion? Peter indicates that AB’s are a conglomeration of type A and type B blood types, and consequently their diets should reflect a mixture of the recommendations he makes for these blood groups. AB’s are therefore advised to eat meats, seafood and dairy, and to once again avoid wheat. The Reality And The Science Of Blood Type Diets. The reality of Dr. D’Adamo’s book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, is that it has overwhelmingly become one of the sustained, best selling diet books of the past two decades, and continues to sell well on Amazon and other retail outlets – 1. Unfortunately, as I will shortly demonstrate, Dr. D’Adamo’s explanations for the health- promoting effects of his diet have little or nothing to do with ABO blood groups. His claims about the origins of human blood types and the dietary selective pressures which elicited the four common blood types are completely incorrect and have no basis in the current scientific literature. By critically examining the faulty concepts and evidence underlying this book, it becomes almost comical how Peter’s series of errors, incorrect assumptions and conclusions actually ended up with dietary recommendations that may have therapeutic value for about 6. The paradoxical nature of this book (bad science, pretty good dietary recommendations) helps to explain its lasting commercial success. Actual Origins of Human Blood Types. Peter’s suggestion that O is the original human blood type is incorrect. Studies in humans, chimpanzees and bonobos (a specific type of chimpanzee) show that alleles (different versions of genes) coding for the A blood type was actually the most ancient version of the ABO blood group, and was shared prior to the evolutionary split between chimpanzees and hominids five to six million years ago. Hence, Peter’s suggestion that blood type A appeared 1. B. C. Now, let’s play a little game of logic and apply the correct data to Peter’s reasoning that . These kinds of games of logic - although fun to play - more importantly underscore the fundamental and incorrect assumptions upon which Peter’s book is based. The O blood type split from A about 2. Peter. The only fact that Peter correctly deduced about the origin of human blood types was that AB was the youngest, but once again he completely missed the correct date, as it was actually about 2. Why does this matter and how does it affect his dietary theories? To begin with, even if we were to believe in Peter’s underlying assumptions that diets should be prescribed upon blood types, he would have to completely revamp his original recommendations. Type A’s should be eating a high protein, meat- based diet rather than the vegetarian fare he suggests. But what about type O’s? With the correct evolutionary information, should they now be eating a vegetarian menu? And what about type B’s and type AB’s – what should they now be eating? Most telling of the logical failings of Peter’s blood type diet is the observation that all four of the major blood types had evolved almost 2. Agricultural Revolution 1. Yet Peter would have us convinced that three of the four major blood groups only came into existence slightly before or after the Agricultural Revolution, and as a direct result from dietary selective pressures wrought by Neolithic food introductions. Because it works – but only for about 4. Remember that for blood type O, Peter advocates a high meat, low carbohydrate . If we look at the frequencies of the four major blood types for the entire world population, blood type O is by far the most frequently occurring version. It is found in 6. A (2. 1%), B (1. 6%) and AB (1- 3%)6. In the United States, the four blood type frequencies are O (4. A (4. 2%), B (1. 0%) and AB (4%)7. So you can see that Peter has essentially advocated a diet similar to the Paleo Diet for between 4. Quite simply, Peter’s diet works for about 4. References. ~D'Adamo, P. Eating Traditional Foods and the Blood Type Diet by Hybrid Rasta Mama. As many of you are aware, I embarked upon a journey in eating Real/Traditional Foods a little over a year ago. I have been full steam ahead on traditional eating (sans most gluten since Tiny is gluten intolerant). Here is something important to share. When I started following a Traditional Diet, I slowly incorporated red meat into my repertoire of food. At first I felt guilty since I choose not to eat red meat for reasons related to animal welfare. However, as my health improved, my guilt lifted. I will spare you ALL of the gory details but I think that what I am about to share is VERY important for anyone currently following a Traditional Diet or thinking about incorporating all or some elements into your current nutritional lifestyle. I started to experience some major issues in the elimination department, i. I am well versed in the gut, digestive process, bowels, etc. This wonderful man will actually spend time treating the whole family so I mentioned my little issue. He immediately began asking me about my food intake and after a lengthy discussion of my historical eating patterns and current eating trends, he raised an eyebrow and asked me my blood type. He nodded his head and informed me that not only do I have the second rarest blood type (and should be donating and privately storing my own blood in the event of a shortage) but that my blood type did not allow for me to properly process the proteins found in red meat. Protein digestion is difficult for A and AB blood types in general but red meat is a killer. He surmised that my entire intestinal track was severely compromised as it tried to break down proteins that it truly could not handle. Plus, after 1. 5 years of not eating red meat, my entire system was trying to adjust. Add to this the mass amounts of antibiotics I was on after having surgery in April and my gut was just damaged period. Eating what my body physically is best able to handle is a pretty big deal. So I explored this further. Some of you have probably heard of the Eat Right for Your Type diet plan. I certainly had and had previously read a lot about it. There are many arguments in favor of it but just as many against it. Quite frankly, I understood the science behind it but at the same time sort of saw it as the next fad diet. So I never really paid much attention to the whole idea. The idea that my blood type was responsible for some of my gut issues is actually fascinating to me. I have dug into researching the links between your blood type and your food intake. There is a lot to this, more than just your blood type. Gender, ethnicity, age, and genetic abnormalities can all affect the . Your overall gut health also will greatly contribute. So I would advise anyone undertaking a blood type diet to really, really do your research. However, there is a lot of evidence that points to specific foods being better and easier for your body to handle if your blood type is taken into consideration when making food choices. Traditional Diets and Blood Type Diets are VERY compatible. You can still follow each and every tenant of a Traditional Diet. Since traditional foods are so varied, there will be lots for any blood type to choose from. And with the blood type diet there is no hard and firm recommendation as to how to prepare your foods. So you can still cook with coconut oil and butter, soak your grains, ferment compatible foods, and take fermented cod liver oil! I wrote the above post about six weeks ago and as usual, got sidetracked and have not yet published it. After further research and experimentation, I still believe that there is definitely something to blood types and food compatibility. However, after reading Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell Mc. Bride, I have become much more aware of how much your gut health plays a role in your ability to process the foods you eat as well as absorb much needed nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Your gut health is also responsible for staving off basically every disease under the sun. A healthy gut means a healthy mind, body, and soul. And unhealthy gut leads to doom and gloom. Since writing the above post, I have also undergone some additional medical tests and big surprise, found out that I have celiac sprue (gluten intolerance) and possible ulcerative colitis. I have to have a colonoscopy in August (try not to be jealous) and this will give me a definitive answer on the colitis as well as anything else lurking. Why share this with you? And why get sidetracked from what was supposed to be a post about blood types and nutrition? First, in an effort to restore my gut to its best possible health, I am undertaking a huge dietary change known as the GAPS diet. The diet is based on research done by Natasha Campbell Mc. Bride and has been met with huge success. Well, that is what I am going to find out. This will be the true test. If and when I get my gut clean and pure, will I be able to digest and absorb fats and proteins better than I am now OR will my AB blood type continue to limit my ability to enjoy these foods? I can't wait to find out! Back to my original post. But I wanted anyone interested in a blood type diet to have all of the information they need in one place. So continue reading for some additional information on blood types as well as 4 charts outlining what foods are good, bad, and neutral for your blood type. But first, a little behind the science look at blood types and food compatibility. In 1. 99. 6, Dr. Peter D'Adamo published a book in which he outlined a diet based on different blood types. D'Adamo, he was not the first or the last doctor or nutritionist to discuss the idea of blood type and food intake. Therefore, I am not going to credit him with the discovery of the blood type diet. In addition, I am not looking at the blood type diet as a weight loss diet plan. I am looking at it as part of an overall health picture for the human body. Ok, enough of that. The theory with this nutritional approach is that each blood type has specific antigens that control bodily function, such as the immune and digestive systems. When foreign particles enter the body, the antigens either let them through or recognize them as threats and attack. The theory is that the blood's antigens react in a similar manner to foods, designating them as acceptable or threats. Therefore, knowing your blood type – either A, B, AB, or O – will help you distinguish which foods are best for your body. And if you want to get a little more scientific. Lectins are known for their ability to cause agglutination (binding) of some molecules, such as carbohydrates, for example. However, the nature of lectins, as well as their actual role, still remains undiscovered. In the theory of the blood type diet eating wrong foods leads to a situation, when lectins cause red blood cells to stick together. Of course, such bound cells are bigger in size than individual cells, and it gets more and more challenging for them to travel through the tiny capillaries in many organs of the human body. As the result, the blood capillaries begin to narrow and finally clog up, causing kind of micro infarctions in many vitally important tissues of the human body. That is why the blood type diet works to show people what types of food are allowed for specific blood type and what products should be avoided in order to prevent the process of red cells agglutination by lectins. Besides, the blood type diet says that there is also a connection between one's blood group and the level of stomach juices. For example, people with blood type 0 have the increased level of stomach acid, which may lead to ulcer development. In this situation eating meat may really help, because transforming the roasted beefsteak into fuel for human body requires much more stomach acid than it is needed to digest veggie salad, for example. Here is a look at each blood type in more detail. Type APeople with type A blood have a hard time digesting animal protein, and benefit more from a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains. The production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is low for people with type A, and therefore animal protein is not easily digested. Type A blood people are usually lactose intolerant, too. By eliminating meat and dairy from your diet, you will begin to lose weight and your body will respond positively. Type BAlthough blood type B people can handle almost all foods, some foods will cause weight gain. Foods to avoid include corn, buckwheat, sesame seeds, peanuts and lentils. Type Bs can't handle gluten in wheat products, so switching to a gluten- free diet is beneficial. Unlike the other blood types, type Bs can handle dairy products. Types Bs will also benefit from green vegetables, lamb, mutton, rabbit, liver, turkey, eggs, fish, licorice tea, soy, olive and flaxseed oil, oatmeal, millet, rice bran, spelt and puffed rice. Type OType O is the oldest blood type in human history. Those with type O digest meat better than any other blood type. Unlike type A, type O people produce a lot of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. However, Type Os have a hard time digesting dairy products and food containing gluten. The best diet for a type O is a greater ratio of proteins and less dairy and gluten. It would be best to exclude all dairy and include gluten- free foods in your diet. Type ABBlood type AB is the most “recent” type in terms of human evolution, and is the rarest of all blood types as well. Like type As, people with type AB don't produce a lot of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and therefore have a sensitive digestive system. However, animal protein is still important for type ABs. The AB blood type is thought to be more complicated than the other blood types. It combines some of the vulnerabilities of both the Type A and Type B blood types. Since I am a Type AB, here are the specific foods that an individual with Type AB blood should avoid. Lose Two Pounds in One Sitting: Taking the Mioscenic Route. Bethany Home, surrounded by her loving family. To celebrate Edna's life, family and friends may visit from 3: 0. As Edna wished, you may designate any memorials to Albrecht Acres or Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, in lieu of flowers. Edna Charlotte Gottschalk was born in Dubuque on April 2. William and Charlotte (Jecklin) Gottschalk. Edna was an honoree in Albrecht Acres' Hall of Fame, Secretary of Dubuque County Women's Food Service, Vice- President of Sherrill Methodist Women's Society, member of the Women's Christian Group, and . Although not cut down or struck by lightning, she slowly and gracefully bent in the winds of time over nine decades, always reaching to the sky with prayer and providing spiritual guidance to all. Over the years precious limbs were lost: her beloved daughter Kris Ann, age 2. Ken, her husband of sixty years. These losses did not destroy her core, but scarred over to give further refuge to those who sought or needed her canopy of love and care. A tree has a root system as large as the tree itself. Edna's life was deeply rooted in her connection with and love for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She has left a forest of strong trees and emerging saplings, still being nourished by her kind spirit. Edna is survived by her sons: Dr. Darryl (Terry) Mozena of Dubuque, Ambassador Dan (Grace) Mozena of Silver Spring, Maryland, Jeffrey (Janet) Mozena of Dubuque, and Terry (Angela) Mozena of Dubuque, and son- in- law Marty Mc. Namer of Dubuque, husband of deceased daughter Kris Ann. She is also survived by her twenty- two grandchildren and great- grandchildren: Christopher (Katie) Mozena of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and parents of Manuel and Micah; Dr. Jonathan (Anna Mitsis) Mozena of Fredericksburg, Virginia and parents of Harrison, Zoe, and Jack; Andrew (Amy) Mozena of Dubuque and parents of Sophia, Hannah, and Charlotte; Benjamin (Emily) Mozena of Iowa City, Iowa and parents of Maya and Eleanor; Anne (SSG Tyler Craig) Mozena of Saratoga Springs, Utah and parents of Mira; Dr. Mark Mozena of Washington, D. C.; Dr. Alanna Mozena of Seattle, Washington; Nicholas Mozena of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Gabriel Mozena of Iowa City, Iowa; Noah Mozena of Bozeman, Montana; and Jacob Mozena of Bozeman, Montana. In addition to Ken, her husband of 6. Edna was preceded in death by her daughter Kris Ann Mozena Mc. Namer, her parents, and her two brothers, Melvin and Paul Gottschalk. A special thanks to Dr. Ron Iverson, the staff of Bethany Home, and the nursing staff of Finley Hospital. Gregg W. Marolf, 6. Dubuque died Saturday, March 2. University of Iowa. East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 1. Saturday, March 2. Unity Point Health- The Finley Hospital in Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1. Saturday, April 1, 2. St. Mary's Catholic Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dean Smith officiating. Mary's Church, 1. Montgomery Ave. Friday at the Church, and members of American Legion Post # 7. He married his true love Doris Tranel on June 7, 1. Nativity BVM in Menominee. Earl attended St Mary's School and East Dubuque High School. Upon graduation, Earl followed his dreams of protecting his country by joining the Army to serve in Japan in 1. Upon returning to the states, Earl was employed in 1. John Deere Dubuque Works for 4. Throughout the years of raising his family Earl also worked at Sears as a mechanic. Upon retirement his hard work ethic and love for the John Deere community led him to working at Runde Custom Upholstery and taking many bus trips with John Deere retirees. Earl was drawn to continue protecting his community by joining the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department in 1. He generously donated 5. Earl was known by all that loved him as a very faith filled man. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish in East Dubuque, a member of the Holy Name Society and a Dominican Associate. He also made it a practice to attend St. Anthony's weekly school mass when his grandchildren were attending there. His selfless giving continued as he was a member of the American Legion, school board, One Hundred Club of Jo Daviess, and participant of the Honor Flight. Earl's true generosity was seen in the endless farmer's markets he volunteered every Saturday morning selling cinnamon bread for the Sinsinawa Mound, the countless hours he dedicated to creating and overseeing the before & after school care program at St. Mary's School, and the hundreds of Bingo game nights he volunteered at. His happiest moments were those spent with his family, whether traveling to camp across this great nation, taking groups of the grandkids on trips to see the spots he took their parents years earlier, or sitting in the stands supporting and cheering his grandkids in their activities of choice. Grandpa Earl loved his bleacher chair and was often seen hustling in and out of events so as not to miss anything. He rarely missed an event. Life was a gift to him and he intended to enjoy it with those whom he loved dearly. As if the time spent with Grandpa Earl wasn't enough, he spent countless hours restoring furniture for family, sewing bags & floor pillows for the grandkids, and laboring over roasters of homemade soup made from the heart. Surviving are his wife, Doris; seven children, Juliane (David) Rossman of Dubuque, Allen (Ria) Hasken of Miamisburg, OH, Janel (David) Cebulko of Bartlett, IL, Lloyd (Faith) Hasken of Elgin, IL, Beth (Joe) Broderick of Dubuque, Glenn (Tina) Hasken of Dubuque, and Martha (Kevin) Grossman of Brooklyn Park, MN; twenty- four grandchildren Nick (Sophie), Amanda, Megan (fianc.
